Claude Tag is an AI assistant built directly into Slack that behaves like a standing member of a team rather than a private chatbot: anyone in a channel can tag @Claude with a task, and it works through it — sometimes over hours — before posting the result back in a thread everyone can see. Anthropic launched Claude Tag in beta on June 23, 2026, replacing its earlier, more limited Claude-in-Slack app.
How it works
Once Claude is added to a channel, anyone can mention it with a request — “@Claude summarize this thread and draft a reply,” “@Claude pull last week’s numbers into a table.” Running on Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 model, Claude breaks the request into stages, works through them one at a time (and sometimes several at once), and posts the outcome as a thread reply. Because the work runs asynchronously on Anthropic’s own servers rather than in the chat window, a task keeps going after you close Slack, and Claude can schedule follow-up steps for itself over hours or days instead of finishing in a single exchange.
Two features set it apart from a typical AI chat window:
- Multiplayer context. There is one Claude per channel, not one per person. Everyone sees the same thread, can watch what Claude is doing, and can pick up a task where a teammate left off.
- Ambient mode. When a team turns this on, Claude does not wait to be tagged — it proactively surfaces updates, flags relevant information from connected tools, and follows up on threads that have gone quiet.
Claude also builds memory from a channel’s history and from any tools or data sources it is connected to, so teams do not have to re-explain context on every request. Administrators decide exactly which channels, tools, and data Claude is allowed to reach.
Not just a chatbot
Anthropic calls Claude Tag a “teammate” rather than an assistant because of that shared, persistent design: instead of each person holding a private conversation that resets when they hand off a task, the whole channel shares one long-running AI agent with a memory of what has already been asked and done.
Claude Tag vs. Claude, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork
Anthropic now ships several distinct products under the Claude name:
- Claude — the standard chat: one person, one conversation, real-time back-and-forth.
- Claude Code — a specialized coding agent that runs against a codebase, typically from a terminal.
- Claude Cowork — a general task agent that handles one person’s documents, spreadsheets, and research across devices.
- Claude Tag — the only one of the four built around a shared Slack channel rather than a single user, and designed to keep working, unprompted, alongside a conversation people are already having.
Availability and cost
Claude Tag is in beta for Claude Enterprise and Team customers only — it is not available on the free tier or the individual Pro plan. As of July 2026, per Claude’s pricing page, a standard Team seat costs $20/month billed annually ($25/month billed monthly), a Premium seat costs $100/month ($125/month monthly), and Enterprise pricing is negotiated per organization. Existing users of the older Claude-in-Slack app do not need to do anything to switch: Anthropic is moving every workspace over to Claude Tag automatically on August 3, 2026.
Getting started
A Slack workspace admin adds the Claude app from the Slack App Marketplace, or follows Anthropic’s own get-started guide, and approves it for the whole workspace or specific channels. From there, anyone with access can invite @Claude into a channel and start tagging it with tasks.
In the news
Anthropic’s beta launch of Claude Tag on June 23, 2026 replaced its earlier Slack integration and came with an internal benchmark: the company says 65% of its own product team’s code is now written through an internal version of the tool. Read the full launch coverage.
FAQ
Is Claude Tag a different AI model from regular Claude? No — it runs on the same Opus 4.8 model as other Claude products. What differs is the mode: a shared, asynchronous Slack presence instead of a private one-on-one chat.
Can Claude Tag see every Slack channel in my company? No. Administrators grant it access to specific channels, tools, and data sources; it cannot act outside what has been explicitly authorized.
Do I need a special Slack plan to use it? You need a Slack plan that supports paid apps, plus a Claude Enterprise or Team subscription. Claude Tag is not available to individual Pro or free Claude users.
What happens to the old Claude-in-Slack app? Anthropic is retiring it in favor of Claude Tag, with existing workspaces switched over automatically on August 3, 2026.
