Georgia's AI Team Wins Seven Medals at IOAI 2026

Georgia’s national AI team won seven medals — two gold, three silver, and two bronze — plus one honorable mention at the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI), finishing seventh among 109 participating countries, organizers said this week.

The competition ran in Astana, Kazakhstan, from August 2 to 8 and drew secondary-school students from more than 100 countries to solve applied problems in machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing. It was the third IOAI overall and Georgia’s second time fielding a national team, after squad members were named ahead of the trip.

Who won

Gold medals went to Nikoloz Gegenava and Giorgi Maisuradze. Silver medalists were Nikoloz Kipshidze, Anton Ingorokva, and Mate Rekhviashvili, while Luka Berikelashvili and Nikoloz Kiladze took bronze. Giorgi Tskitishvili received an honorable mention. Five of the eight team members attend Tbilisi’s V. Komarov Physics and Mathematics Public School No. 199; Kipshidze studies at Public School No. 136.

The team was assembled by the Georgian Artificial Intelligence Association (GAIA) with financial backing from TBC and trained through the Tech Olympiads Hub at Business and Technology University in Tbilisi. Shota Elkhanishvili served as head coach, with Luka Darsalia and Nika Mikaberidze as co-leaders.

A wider push in AI education

The medal haul follows a broader push to expand AI education for Georgian students. GAIA ran five “AI League” cohorts in 2026 through the Tech Olympiads Hub, putting roughly 150 students through machine-learning coursework ahead of national team selection. Georgian students also medaled earlier this year at the first European AI Olympiad, a separate regional competition. Georgia’s result places it among the stronger showings from countries outside the traditional AI research powerhouses; this year’s edition drew delegations from more than 100 countries to Astana, three years after IOAI’s debut in Bulgaria in 2024.
