Apple’s market capitalization briefly overtook Nvidia’s on July 17, as a fresh wave of doubt about the payoff from AI infrastructure spending sent chip stocks tumbling.

What happened

During Friday’s trading session, Apple’s valuation climbed to roughly $4.9 trillion while Nvidia shares fell as much as 3.9%, pulling the chipmaker’s market cap down to about $4.82 trillion, according to Fox Business and Forbes. The swing briefly made Apple the world’s most valuable public company for the first time since April 2025. By the closing bell, Nvidia had recovered most of its losses and reclaimed the top spot at roughly $4.92 trillion, edging out Apple’s $4.89 trillion.

The selloff wasn’t confined to one company: AMD, Micron, TSMC and Cerebras all traded lower, and Japan’s Nikkei 225 posted its steepest weekly decline since April 2025, as chip and hardware stocks led the region down.

The trigger

The catalyst was Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight model that Alibaba-backed Moonshot AI released this week to compete with leading US systems. The release reignited a familiar worry across the AI industry: that capable models can be trained and served with far less compute than the current hyperscale buildout assumes, which would blunt demand growth for the highest-end GPUs.

Toni Meadows of BRI Wealth Management told Fox Business that Apple’s edge lies in being “less exposed to capex intensity,” since it monetizes AI mainly through its own devices and services rather than by building data centers. Benjamin Hall of Segal Macro Advisors added that new entrants like SK Hynix could “spread out the focus away from the pure Magnificent Seven names.”

Why it matters

Nvidia has held the title of world’s most valuable company since June 2025, when it overtook Microsoft, and is up 7.3% so far this year against Apple’s nearly 23% gain. Friday’s swap, brief as it was, shows how sensitive AI-linked valuations remain to any sign that frontier models are getting cheaper to build — a question that has recurred each time a Chinese lab has shipped a competitive open-weight model.
