AMD and Anthropic announced a strategic partnership on July 22, 2026, under which the chipmaker will invest up to $5 billion in the AI lab while supplying it with a large share of AMD’s next-generation processors.

The deal

Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD’s Instinct MI450 Series GPUs — specifically the MI455X — packaged into AMD’s Helios rack-scale systems, alongside AMD’s EPYC “Venice” CPUs, Pensando networking hardware and the ROCm software stack. The MI455X is the flagship chip of the MI400 generation AMD unveiled to challenge Nvidia’s data-center dominance. Deployment of the first gigawatt is set to begin in the first half of 2027.

AMD chair and CEO Lisa Su said the collaboration “brings together Anthropic’s leadership in frontier AI with the full strength of AMD high-performance computing.” AMD said it has committed to a strategic equity investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic, though it has not disclosed a timeline for the investment or how it fits into Anthropic’s broader capital structure.

Beyond the hardware

The partnership also covers software: AMD and Anthropic plan to use Claude to help optimize AI workloads for Instinct GPUs and speed up development of ROCm, AMD’s alternative to Nvidia’s CUDA platform. AMD said it will also roll out Claude across its own engineering and product-development teams. “By partnering with AMD across the stack, we are securing the capacity we need and optimizing it for Claude,” said Tom Brown, Anthropic’s co-founder and chief compute officer.

A new front in the chip race

For AMD, locking in a marquee AI lab’s multi-gigawatt compute roadmap is a concrete step in its effort to erode Nvidia’s grip on AI hardware. For Anthropic, the arrangement adds a major new hardware supplier as the company races to keep pace with rivals in training and serving increasingly large models.

Neither company disclosed further financial terms of the deal.
