Microsoft launched Microsoft Frontier Company on July 2, 2026, a new operating unit backed by a $2.5 billion investment that will embed 6,000 industry and engineering experts directly inside enterprise clients to design, build, and maintain AI systems at scale.
How it works
Unlike traditional consulting, Microsoft Frontier Company’s engineers work as extended members of customer teams — joining stand-ups, writing production code alongside in-house developers, and staying engaged over standard six-to-twelve-month periods. The company describes its model as going “beyond what has been labeled as Forward Deployed Engineering,” building continuous improvement loops between AI platforms and enterprise governance layers.
Rodrigo Kede Lima, a 30-year Microsoft veteran who previously led enterprise transformations across the Americas and Asia, will serve as president.
Protecting customer intelligence
A central principle of the offering is data sovereignty. Microsoft says customer data, intellectual property, and competitive workflows will not be used to train models in ways that commoditize clients’ differentiation. The unit is positioned as model-agnostic, working across Microsoft’s own AI, OpenAI, Anthropic, open-source options, and specialized models — without locking customers to any single provider.
Early named customers include LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group), Land O’Lakes, Unilever, and Novo Nordisk. Global system integrators Accenture, Capgemini, EY, KPMG, and PwC are listed as partners.
“There is no societal permission for an AI future that eats the intelligence of the companies it’s deployed inside,” the announcement states.
Competitive context
Microsoft’s launch is part of a broader industry wave. Amazon Web Services announced a $1 billion forward-deployed engineering commitment on June 30. OpenAI and Anthropic each launched comparable joint ventures earlier this year, backed by private equity partnerships. Enterprise AI deployment — getting AI to actually work inside complex organizations — has emerged as one of the most contested battlegrounds in the industry.
