AMD has unveiled the Threadripper Halo Station, a liquid-cooled desktop workstation the company says can run AI models with more than a trillion parameters entirely on local hardware, without a cloud connection.

AMD unveiled the Threadripper Halo Station in Berlin at the IFA 2026 trade show on September 4, part of a broader “personal AI” push aimed at moving large-model workloads off the cloud and onto individual machines. Jack Huynh, AMD’s senior vice president and general manager of computing and graphics, presented the system during the show’s opening keynote, framing local compute and data privacy as the point of the exercise.
Inside the machine
At its core sits a 96-core, 192-thread Threadripper PRO 9995WX processor built on AMD’s Zen 5 architecture, paired with up to four liquid-cooled AMD Instinct MI350P accelerators — the first time AMD has offered the MI350P with liquid cooling. Each accelerator carries 144GB of HBM3E memory running at roughly 4TB/s; a four-accelerator configuration reaches up to 576GB of combined accelerator memory, on top of up to 2TB of system DDR5. AMD says that combined capacity is what lets a single workstation hold and run models above the trillion-parameter mark — a class of AI system that normally requires a full section of data-center servers.
Aimed squarely at Nvidia
AMD’s intent is explicit: it is positioning the Halo Station as a direct rival to Nvidia’s DGX Station line, arguing developers and researchers no longer need cloud access or a shared cluster to work with frontier-scale models. It’s the latest round in a broader contest over who controls local AI compute — OpenAI, for instance, has been testing its own inference chip to cut Nvidia dependence for cloud workloads, as previously reported. AMD is now bringing the same competition to the desk.
Price and availability still open
AMD did not disclose pricing or a ship date for the Halo Station, describing it only as a prototype configuration shown for the first time at IFA. Analysts who covered the unveiling, including The Register, estimated that the processor, accelerators and memory alone would cost well over $100,000 at current street prices — before factoring in the finished system’s power and cooling. AMD has neither confirmed nor disputed that estimate.
